- Joao Pedro named Gabriel Magalhaes as the toughest defender he faced during the season
- The Chelsea forward praised the Arsenal defender’s speed and impressive performances
- Pedro said he shared a strong relationship with Gabriel as teammates in the Brazilian national team
Joao Pedro has identified Gabriel Magalhaes as the toughest defender he faced during the season, praising the Arsenal centre-back for his speed and defensive quality.
The Chelsea forward made the remarks during an interview with TNT Sports Brasil, where he reflected on some of the most difficult opponents he encountered throughout the campaign.
Pedro ranked Paris Saint-Germain defender Willian Pacho and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah among the top defenders he played against, but ultimately singled out Gabriel as the standout challenge.
“The toughest defender to play against this season? Top three: Willian Pacho and Jonathan Tah, but Gabriel Magalhaes was the toughest in my opinion,” Pedro said.
The Brazilian striker explained that Gabriel’s pace and physical presence caught him by surprise during their encounters, although he insisted he also managed to test the Arsenal defender during matches.
“I was surprised by his speed, but I gave him a hard time, too! He’s been inspired this season,” he added.
Gabriel has enjoyed another impressive campaign for Arsenal, playing a key role in the club’s defensive performances in both domestic and European competitions. The defender has consistently been praised for his strength, composure and leadership at the back, helping Arsenal remain competitive at the highest level.
Pedro’s comments are likely to further boost Gabriel’s growing reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders. The pair also share a close relationship off the pitch, having represented the Brazilian national team together on several occasions.
Reflecting on their friendship and international partnership, Pedro expressed happiness that Gabriel would be alongside him rather than against him during major tournaments with Brazil.
“We have a great relationship. I am happy he is on my side in the World Cup,” the Chelsea attacker said.
Pedro’s remarks come as both players continue to establish themselves as important figures for Brazil ahead of future international competitions. While Gabriel has become a regular presence in defence, Pedro is also regarded as one of the country’s promising attacking talents.
The praise from a fellow Brazilian international is expected to reinforce Gabriel’s standing among elite defenders in European football following another strong season in England.
