- Ivan Juric has parted ways with Southampton following the club’s relegation from the Premier League after a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
- Despite Juric’s appointment in December to replace Russell Martin, Southampton couldn’t turn their fortunes around, finishing with just one win under his management.
- Southampton is now focused on finding their third manager of the season to help the team secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
Relegated Premier Leagie side Southampton has parted ways with head coach Ivan Juric just one day after the club’s relegation from the League was confirmed. The Saints were officially demoted following a 3-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, marking the end of a turbulent season that saw the club finish in the bottom three.
Juric, who took charge in December after the dismissal of Russell Martin, was brought in to stabilise the team and lead them to safety.
However, despite his best efforts, Southampton failed to turn their fortunes around under his leadership. With only one Premier League win during his tenure, a 2-1 victory over Ipswich in February, the Saints experienced a dismal run of results, including 12 losses and just one draw in their remaining 13 league matches.
A club statement acknowledged the difficult position Juric faced upon his arrival, citing the challenging nature of trying to improve a squad already struggling at the foot of the table,
"Ivan came to Southampton at a tough time and was tasked with trying to improve a squad in a difficult situation, unfortunately, we haven’t seen performances progress the way we had hoped, but we would like to thank Ivan and his staff for their honesty and hard work as they fought against the odds to try and keep us up,” the statement read.
As Southampton embarks on the search for their third manager of the season, Simon Rusk will return as interim boss.
Rusk, who previously took charge after Martin’s sacking, will be supported by Adam Lallana, the club’s midfielder, who has taken on his first coaching role as Rusk’s assistant.
The statement also expressed the club’s gratitude to their fans, acknowledging their unwavering support during what has been a disappointing campaign,
"Despite the challenges that relegation will bring, our goal is to restore a sense of pride for them in their team and club once again."
With the Saints now officially relegated, they also made an unfortunate record, becoming the fastest team in Premier League history to drop to the Championship.
Onuachu, Aina shine as Forest hold off Saints in 3-2 thriller
Previously, TheRadar reported that Premier League side Nottingham Forest claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Southampton in a Premier League encounter at the City Ground, with Nigerian stars Paul Onuachu and Ola Aina delivering impactful performances.
The match was not without its share of controversies. A Forest goal was disallowed following a contentious VAR review, and Ugochukwu narrowly avoided a red card for a reckless late challenge.
