- Ademola Lookman scored a late winner as Atalanta beat AC Milan 2-1 to claim the Serie A top spot
- Lookman’s decisive header secured Atalanta’s ninth consecutive win, extending their lead over Napoli by two points
- The Nigerian international reflected on his CAF African Player of the Year nomination, calling it an “honour” as his standout performances continue to shine
Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman continued his stellar form in Serie A, leading Atalanta to a crucial 2-1 victory over AC Milan at the Gewiss Stadium on Saturday, December 7.
His late header not only secured three points for La Dea but also took them to the top of the Serie A table, extending their winning streak to an impressive nine games. Lookman’s heroics came in a match that pitted him against his compatriot, Samuel Chukwueze, and Milan’s recent resurgent form.
Former Milan striker Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring for Atalanta in the first half, rising high to a free kick and nodding home against his old club. The lead was short-lived, however, as Alvaro Morata equalised just ten minutes later with a clinical finish, bringing the Rossoenri’s back into the game.
The match seemed destined for a draw as both sides struggled to find rhythm after the break. However, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men found a way late in the game as Sead Kolasinac flicked a corner towards the back post, where Lookman was waiting to nod the ball past Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan in the 88th minute.
The Nigerian international’s decisive nod sent Atalanta fans into euphoria, while Milan was left to rue missed chances and defensive lapses.
Speaking after the game, Lookman expressed his delight in the team’s performance and his contribution to their victory,
“It’s a very important game against a very strong team that is doing well in the league. We performed well tonight, three big points, and we continue like this,” he said.
Lookman also took a moment to reflect on his nomination for the prestigious CAF African Player of the Year award,
“It’s an honour to be nominated for this prestigious award. Of course, anyone who is nominated would like to win it. It’s a dream!” he exclaimed.
With his match-winning performances and consistent brilliance, Lookman is regarded as a strong contender for the title.
Atalanta, now two points clear of Napoli at the Serie A summit (although having played one game more), faces a stern test against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, December 10.
Meanwhile, AC Milan will look to bounce back against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday, December 11.
