- Iheanacho speaks with Sevilla FC in an exclusive debut interview
- The Nigerian striker said his biggest goal is not just to score goals but to win trophies
- The latest Sevilla signing also revealed how his nickname ‘senior man’ started as a joke
After securing a two-year contract with Sevilla FC with an option of a third year, Kelechi Iheanacho disclosed the story behind his nickname in his first official interview with the club.
Sevilla FC had earlier announced the signing of the Nigerian striker from Leceister City FC. The former Leicester City forward, whose contract expired at the end of last season, put pen to paper on a deal with the Andalusian club.
In 2014, Iheanacho moved to Europe to join Manchester City, marking the start of his professional career. His big break came during the 2015-2016 season when he played a key role in helping Manchester City win the Premier League.
His ability to score goals and play well in different positions across the attacking front made him a standout player in English football. He holds the record as the highest African goal scorer in the English FA Cup competition.
Kelechi Iheanacho is set to replace Morocco’s Youssef En-Nesyri and play a key role in the attack under new manager Garcia Pimienta.
The Spanish team is aiming to rebuild after a disappointing 2023/24 season, where they ended up in 14th place.
Nigerian forward hopeful to win trophies with Sevilla FC
At his unveiling, Iheanacho emphasized that while scoring goals is important, his main goal is to win many trophies with his new team.
He said, “Scoring goals is great, but the most important thing is to play well and win together as a team. Winning trophies and achieving success is what matters.”
“It feels good to be here. I have followed Sevilla and seen the games. I don’t feel pressure. Now I am here, and what I want is to focus on the games and on the team, continue improving every day, and make history on the pitch.”
Iheanacho joins fellow Nigerian forward, Chidera Ejuke, who signed with the club earlier in June.
