- José Mourinho received a first-of-its-kind yellow card during Fenerbahce’s win over Antalyaspor
- The Fenerbahçe’s manager protested a disallowed goal by placing his laptop on top of the VAR camera
- Fenerbahçe sits second in the Turkish Super Lig standings with five wins and one draw
Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho found himself in the spotlight for an unexpected reason during Fenerbahçe’s 2-0 win over Antalyaspor on Sunday, September 29.
Mourinho earned himself the moniker ‘master of sideline drama’ because of his dramatic displays on the touchline since his previous spells with Chelsea, Inter Milan, AS Roma, and Manchester United,
Mourinho’s frustration with an offside call led to an extraordinary scene involving a laptop and the VAR camera, earning him a yellow card unlike any other in his long managerial career.
After a Fenerbahçe goal was disallowed for offside, Mourinho, visibly irritated, approached the fourth official, but instead of engaging in verbal communication, he carried his laptop toward the VAR camera.
The manager then placed the laptop on top of the VAR equipment, intending to show the officials a replay of the controversial decision. Referee Cihan Aydin, a regular in Champions League officiating, wasn’t swayed by the unorthodox protest and swiftly brandished a yellow card for his drama.
Rather than retreating to the dugout with his laptop, Mourinho left it where it was feeling very dissatisfied with the decision.
Despite the commotion, Fenerbahçe maintained control of the match, adding a second goal three minutes after Mourinho’s booking, courtesy of an own goal by Antalyaspor’s Thalisson Kelven.
This incident comes under FIFA’s revised rules for manager behavior, first introduced in 2018, which allow referees to issue yellow cards for various infractions.
Mourinho, who has a well-documented history of touchline antics at clubs like Chelsea and Real Madrid, had never before seen this type of yellow card and would have been surprised to be hastily shown a card.
Fenerbahçe's victory places them second in the Turkish Super Lig, just three points behind Galatasaray, with five wins, one draw, and a single defeat from their seven matches.
Looking ahead, Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe will face Manchester United, his former team, in the Europa League group stage on October 24, a game Mourinho will hope to be present for provided he doesn’t get two more cautions before the match.
