- Victor Boniface had earlier missed a penalty in the 9th minute, with the goalkeeper reading his shot perfectly
- Robert Andrich equalised for Bayer Leverkusen in the 25th minute
- Boniface redeemed himself by heading home a rebound in the 72nd minute, securing the win for Leverkusen
Super Eagles international Victor Boniface transformed an early setback into triumph, leading Bayer Leverkusen to a dramatic 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Nigerian striker, who missed an early penalty, refused to be discouraged and rose to the occasion with a game-winning goal that sent the home fans wild. Leverkusen's thrilling victory kept spectators on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
The tension began in the 9th minute when Boniface stepped up to the penalty spot after an early foul in the box.
With all eyes on him, he went for the middle of the net, but Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp guessed right, making an impressive save to deny the striker. It was a gut-wrenching moment for Boniface, but his determination didn’t waver.
A minute later, Martin Terrier almost put Leverkusen in front with a fierce shot, but Trapp once again proved impenetrable, keeping the match goalless.
Just as Leverkusen regrouped, Eintracht Frankfurt nearly broke the deadlock with Omar Marmoush's strike rattling the post. Frankfurt’s moment came in the 16th minute when Marmoush coolly converted a penalty, silencing the Leverkusen crowd.
Leverkusen’s response this time was however swift, in the 25th minute, Robert Andrich took full advantage of a loose ball in the box, smashing it past Trapp to level the game.
The momentum shifted as Leverkusen piled on the pressure, with Andrich and Boniface both coming close, but the score remained tied going into halftime.
As the second half started, Leverkusen pushed relentlessly. Andrich struck the post again in the 63rd minute, and despite Florian Wirtz dazzling with his dribbling, he couldn't find any meaningful opportunity.
It wasn't until the 72nd minute that Boniface had his moment of redemption, rising highest to meet a rebound in the box, he calmly headed the ball into the net, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Despite Frankfurt’s late attempts to equalise, including a close-range header from Hugo Ekitike that was cleared off the line, Leverkusen held on for the win. Boniface’s resilience shone through, turning despair into glory with his match-winning contribution.
Few days after announcing N2m giveaway for fans, Boniface gets fined N44m
Previously, TheRadar reported that Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface, had been hit with a one-match suspension and a $25,000 fine following an incident of unsportsmanlike conduct during last week’s Super Cup match against VfB Stuttgart.
The German Football Association (DFB) decided after Boniface was accused of making an obscene gesture toward Stuttgart players in the post-match celebrations. The timing of the suspension comes just four days after Boniface announced plans for a social media giveaway for his fans on X app, formerly Twitter.
