Nigeria’s boxing scene is set for a major boost as Balmoral Group, in partnership with its sports entertainment arm, GameRush, announced the launch of the highly anticipated ‘Friday Fight Night.’

The first edition of this boxing event is scheduled for Friday, February 28 at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Lagos, promising an electrifying atmosphere for both fans and fighters.

The inaugural event will feature six thrilling bouts, showcasing some of Nigeria’s finest fighters. The headline fight of the night will see Basit Adebayo square off against Segun Gbobaniyi for the National Lightweight Title in what is expected to be an intense showdown.

Speaking at a press conference to unveil the event, Ezekiel Adamu, CEO of Balmoral Group, emphasised that ‘Friday Fight Night’ would be more than just another boxing tournament.

He revealed plans to make it a monthly series that would spotlight African boxing talent and elevate the sport across the continent,

“Friday Fight Night will be a monthly series showcasing the best of boxing across Africa, not just in Nigeria. We are creating the right platform for boxers to shine, both locally and globally,” Adamu stated.

He assured fans of top-tier entertainment, saying that while the first edition would feature Nigerian fighters, future events would incorporate boxers from other African nations.

The initiative has received backing from the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC), with its president, Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, commending Balmoral Group for its role in reviving the country’s boxing scene.

He stated the potential of the event to replicate the success of football in Nigeria by increasing the sport’s popularity and professional structure,

“The coming of Balmoral has changed the Nigerian boxing scene, and we the NBBofC appreciate them. For me and the board, we are very happy with your efforts in the industry,” Oladipo said.

NBBofC Secretary General, Remi Aboderin, assured fans that all necessary safety measures, including medical teams, would be in place to ensure fighters’ well-being.

The fight card promises exciting matchups, including the National Cruiserweight Challenge between Kadima Stephen and Sunday Ajuwa, as well as a National Super Bantamweight Challenge featuring Yusuf Adeniji against Babatunde Oni.

Other bouts will see Idowu Okusote face Muritador Monyasahu in another Cruiserweight contest, while Rilwan Lawal will take on Taofeek Ganiyu for the National Featherweight Challenge. In a four-round Cruiserweight clash, Abiodun Adesoji Adeniyi will battle Fatai Balogun.

Can Balmoral Group take Nigerian Boxing beyond limits?

The launch of ‘Friday Fight Night’ is expected to help improve Nigerian boxing by providing local fighters with a platform to display their skills and build professional careers.

Unlike football, which enjoys a well-established league system, boxing in Nigeria has struggled with limited exposure and investment. Balmoral Group’s involvement in the sport could change this, offering boxers more opportunities to fight regularly while also drawing more attention from sponsors and the global boxing community.

By making this event a monthly affair, Balmoral Group is ensuring that boxers can gain more experience and improve their craft, rather than waiting months or even years for a single major fight.

Additionally, regular events will attract younger generations to the sport, which will undoubtedly help the development of future champions.

With its first edition already generating buzz, ‘Friday Fight Night’ could soon become a landmark boxing event in Nigeria’s sports calendar.

Nigerian star Israel Adesanya pockets staggering money despite loss

Previously, TheRadar reported that Adesanya, known as 'The Last Stylebender', was set to earn $750,000 for the UFC 305 fight, while Du Plessis would collect $500,000.

With the anticipated strong performance of the pay-per-view broadcast, both fighters are expected to walk away with earnings well into seven figures.
