Manchester United legend, Gary Neville, has suggested that incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is likely to strengthen key areas of the squad by signing at least four new players.

Alonso, who has been confirmed as the new Chelsea boss, is expected to officially take charge on July 1. However, reports indicate that the former Real Madrid midfielder has already begun outlining his plans for squad reinforcement ahead of the new season.

Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, said he expects Alonso to prioritise experience and balance in crucial positions, particularly in goal, defence and attack.

According to him, Chelsea’s current midfield options are relatively strong, but other areas still require urgent attention.

“So the first thing I think Xabi Alonso will do, he will want a new goalkeeper, a centre-back and a centre-forward with experience,” Neville said.

He added that Chelsea already possess promising midfield talent in players such as Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández and Romeo Lavia, suggesting the club should focus on strengthening other departments rather than overhauling the middle of the pitch.

“They’ve got some experience in central midfield with Caicedo, Fernandez and Lavia, so they can keep those together and they’ve got something there,” he explained.

Chelsea have undergone significant squad changes in recent seasons, investing heavily in young talent while also struggling for consistency in results. The appointment of Alonso is widely seen as part of a long-term project aimed at restoring stability and competitiveness at the club.

Football analysts believe that Alonso’s tactical approach, which has drawn praise during his managerial spell in Germany, could influence Chelsea’s recruitment strategy, particularly in targeting experienced players to guide a relatively young squad.

Neville’s comments have added to growing speculation about how Chelsea will approach the upcoming transfer window, with fans eager to see whether the club will back Alonso with the experienced signings he is believed to favour.

As preparations for the new season continue, attention is now focused on how quickly Chelsea can reshape their squad to match the expectations of their incoming manager.
