Finidi George has stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles. His resignation, announced on Saturday, June 15, 2024, comes in response to the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) decision to appoint a foreign technical adviser.
The news of George’s resignation was confirmed on social media platform X by Toyin Ibitoye, former media officer for the Eagles.
Ibitoye posted, "News just in: Finidi George @FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his @NGSuperEagles manager position.”
Other sources have also confirmed the resignation of the Rivers-born coach.
Finidi George's rise to head coach
George was appointed head coach on April 29, 2024, succeeding Jose Peseiro, whose contract expired in February. During his short tenure, George led the team in two matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series, resulting in a 1-1 draw with South Africa and a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.
Finidi George, who previously managed Enyimba, has ended his brief stint with the national team amid the NFF's strategic shift towards international expertise.
Prior to this, George had been Peseiro’s assistant for 20 months. Despite his brief tenure, George's leadership was marred by disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with the team drawing 1-1 against South Africa and suffering a 2-1 defeat to Benin.
The team's poor performance in these critical matches led to a restructuring of George's contract. His monthly salary was reduced from N15 million to N5 million, and he was relegated to a lesser role. Additionally, the new foreign coach’s staff is set to replace his chosen assistants.
In a meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh, George voiced his frustration over the NFF's lack of support and questioned the dedication of Nigeria's top players during the World Cup qualifiers. This meeting underscored his growing dissatisfaction with the situation, ultimately leading to his resignation.
Osimhen denies George’s accusation of faking injury
Meanwhile, TheRadar previously reported that Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen denied all the allegations levelled against him concerning his discipline and commitment to the Nigerian national team.
Osimhen took to Instagram Live to explain that he had been injured. He said that he had lost his respect for Finidi George but reaffirmed his loyalty to the Super Eagles.
