- Nottingham Forest secured their sixth consecutive Premier League win with a 3-0 victory over Wolves, marking their longest streak since 1966-67
- Forest’s six-game winning run moved them joint-second in the Premier League table, level with Arsenal and just six points behind Liverpool
- Awoniyi’s late strike against Wolves ended a 15-game wait for a goal, boosting his confidence ahead of a clash with former club Liverpool
Nottingham Forest etched their name into Premier League history on Monday night, January 6, securing their sixth consecutive victory with a commanding 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
This remarkable feat marked the club’s longest winning run in England’s top flight since the 1966-67 season, ending over five decades of waiting for such dominance.
The victory also carried added significance for Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who finally broke his goal drought by scoring his first goal of the season. After struggling for minutes and battling form earlier in the campaign, Awoniyi came off the bench to cap off Forest’s emphatic performance, adding a late third goal following earlier strikes from Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood.
Awoniyi’s first goal in 15 appearances this season provided a much-needed confidence boost for the forward, whose form had sparked concern among fans.
Last season, he bagged six goals and three assists in 20 matches, and Forest supporters now believe this could mark the start of an even better campaign provided he maintains fitness.
Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo was full of praise for his team after their dominant display. Speaking in the post-match press conference, Nuno highlighted his players’ hard work and hunger to improve,
“It’s a very tough competition, we’re going to face difficult opponents week in, week out. That’s why we need to stay humble. This win is great, but we haven’t achieved anything yet. There’s still a lot of work ahead of us,” he said.
The victory moved Forest to joint-second in the Premier League standings, level on points with Arsenal and just six points adrift of table-toppers Liverpool.
Nuno, however, stressed the importance of maintaining focus, emphasising that improvement must remain a priority for his squad,
“Our ambition as coaches is always to improve the players, if the players get better, then the team improves, and when the team improves, the club progresses, and the fans celebrate.”
Forest’s upcoming fixtures could prove pivotal in their bid to sustain this winning momentum. They face Luton Town in the FA Cup on Saturday before hosting Liverpool at the City Ground on January 14.
The clash with Liverpool holds special significance for Awoniyi, who was repeatedly loaned out by the Reds before being sold without making a Premier League appearance.
With his confidence growing after ending his drought, the Nigerian striker will be eager to make an impact against his former club.
Nuno also praised the overall performance of his squad, singling out Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga for their creativity and attacking contributions.
“This is what we want, players feeling confident and comfortable on the pitch while working hard, performances like this help build belief, but we have to take it one game at a time,” added the Portuguese coach.
“I’m just happy I got one today,” Nigeria’s Aina elated after helping Forest beat Brentford
Previously, TheRadar reported that Nigerian full-back Ola Aina shone once again as his early strike set Nottingham Forest on course for a stunning 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday, December 21.
The win marked Forest’s third consecutive victory, pushing them momentarily to fourth place in the Premier League table, just two points below Arsenal.
