Brentford right-back Michael Kayode has revealed his ambition to play for Italy’s senior national team, while also expressing pride in his Nigerian heritage.

Born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents, Victoria and Anthony, Kayode has represented Italy at the U18, U19, and U21 levels. Despite his eligibility for both countries, he has indicated a strong desire to earn a call-up to the senior Azzurri squad.

“The opportunity to play for both is amazing,” Kayode told The Athletic. “For every player, being in the national team is a dream, especially right now because the team is qualified for the World Cup. I really hope we qualify. I’m happy that the Nigerian people are happy for me.”

The 21-year-old defender is being closely monitored by Italy’s national team managers, Gennaro Gattuso and Eric Chelle, as the team prepares for the 2026 World Cup playoffs against Northern Ireland. While it remains uncertain whether Kayode will make his senior debut in the upcoming fixture, he is focused on maintaining strong performances at Brentford to increase his chances of selection.

Kayode emphasised the importance of club form in securing a place at the international level. “It’s important to perform really well at the club because if you don’t do well at your club, you won’t get called up. So I just think about Brentford and if I get the chance [with Italy], that’s it,” he said.

Although Nigeria remains an option, Kayode appears committed to representing the country of his birth. Reports suggest that the Italian Football Federation holds an advantage in securing his services, as he is provisionally tied to Italy at youth levels.

The defender’s versatility and defensive solidity have been pivotal for Brentford this season, and his development has not gone unnoticed. Football analysts believe that if Kayode continues his upward trajectory, a senior call-up for Italy could be imminent.

Despite the international tug-of-war, Kayode maintains a balanced perspective, appreciating both his Italian upbringing and Nigerian roots. His statement reflects the growing trend of dual-nationality players navigating opportunities across multiple national teams, balancing professional ambition with personal identity.

As the playoffs draw near, all eyes will be on Kayode to see whether he can make the leap from youth international to full senior representative, potentially realising his World Cup dream with Italy while maintaining his proud connection to Nigeria.
