The 2024 Ballon d'Or gala in Paris on Monday night, October 28 saw Manchester City’s Rodri take home the coveted Ballon d’Or award, capping an incredible season and championing Spain’s success on the global stage. This year’s awards were special for Spanish football, with winners from both men's and women's leagues, as Barcelona and Real Madrid dominated club categories, and rising star Lamine Yamal made history with his Kopa Trophy win.
Despite attending the prestigious event unable to walk without crutches, Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win proved his standing as one of the most influential players in world football. The Spanish midfielder, who was very important in Manchester City’s Premier League and Champions League victories, beat notable competitors like Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham.
On the women’s side, Barcelona and Spain’s Aitana Bonmati clinched the Ballon d’Or Feminin, successfully defending her title. Bonmati’s year was marked by consistent performances and leadership, which contributed to Barcelona’s trophy sweep, including Liga F and the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Her achievement highlighted a groundbreaking year for Spanish women’s football, which has grown significantly in stature over the last few years.
Continuing the accolades for Barcelona, 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal took home the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the world’s best U-21 player. Yamal has already become a household name, particularly after his impressive performance at the UEFA Euro Championship, where his clutch goal against France secured Spain’s spot in the final.
The Barcelona forward has been a revelation in La Liga as well, contributing to Barcelona’s dominant season and earning praise from players and coaches alike.
In the coaching categories, Carlo Ancelotti and Emma Hayes emerged as this year’s honorees. Ancelotti, who did not attend the ceremony due to Real Madrid’s team boycott, received the Men's Coach of the Year award for his remarkable campaign that saw Madrid secure La Liga and a Champions League title.
Chelsea’s Emma Hayes, meanwhile, was recognised as Women’s Coach of the Year after concluding her Chelsea career on a high note with a fifth consecutive Women’s Super League title.
Other notable awards included the Gerd Muller Trophy, awarded jointly to Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe for their remarkable 52-goal seasons across all competitions for club and country. Kane attended the ceremony in person, while Mbappe’s absence aligned with Real Madrid’s decision not to attend after Vinicius was reportedly passed over for the Ballon d’Or.
Emiliano Martinez won the Lev Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper, marking the second consecutive year he has taken home the honour, after a standout performance with Aston Villa and Argentina’s Copa America campaign.
Real Madrid and Barcelona were each honoured as Clubs of the Year for men’s and women’s football, respectively. Real Madrid’s successful season, highlighted by domestic and European titles, brought further acclaim to a team filled with top-tier talent.
Barcelona’s women’s team, having completed a quadruple that included the Copa de la Reina and the Supercopa won the Club of the Year in women’s football.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony proved a celebration of individual brilliance and collective success, particularly for Spanish football.
