Arsenal etched their name into the UEFA Champions League record books for an unfortunate reason on Saturday night after suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the 2026 final.

The Gunners were beaten on penalties by the French champions following a fiercely contested encounter that ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of football. Despite a determined performance from Mikel Arteta’s side, it was PSG who ultimately emerged victorious, claiming Europe’s most prestigious club trophy and leaving Arsenal’s long wait for continental glory unresolved.

Arsenal took the lead through Kai Havertz, who found the back of the net during regular time to give the North London club hope of securing a historic triumph. However, PSG responded through Ousmane Dembele, whose equaliser ensured the match remained level after 90 minutes.

Neither side was able to find a winner during extra time, forcing the contest into a penalty shoot-out. PSG held their nerve from the spot to secure victory and lift the Champions League trophy, while Arsenal were left to reflect on another painful defeat on Europe’s biggest stage.

The result also saw Arsenal set an unwanted competition record. According to football statistics provider OptaJoe, the Premier League side now holds the record for the most matches played in Champions League history without ever winning the tournament.

Having featured in 226 Champions League matches, Arsenal remain the competition’s most experienced club yet to lift the famous trophy. The record was further cemented by their latest final defeat, adding to the disappointment of their previous appearance in the 2006 final, where they lost to Barcelona.

The latest setback means Arsenal’s quest for a first European crown will continue, despite significant progress under manager Mikel Arteta in recent seasons.

Statistics from the final also highlighted the scale of the challenge Arsenal faced against Luis Enrique’s well-drilled PSG side. The Gunners recorded an average possession figure of just 24.7 per cent during the match, the lowest by any team in a Champions League final since records began for the metric in the 2003–04 season.

It was also the lowest possession figure recorded by an Arsenal side under Arteta in any match where the team had all 11 players on the pitch throughout the contest.

While Arsenal’s supporters will be disappointed by the outcome, the club’s run to the final demonstrated its continued resurgence among Europe’s elite. However, the defeat serves as a reminder that the Champions League trophy remains the one major honour still missing from Arsenal’s illustrious history.

For PSG, meanwhile, the victory marks another significant milestone under Luis Enrique, as the French club continues to establish itself among the continent’s leading football powers.
